If your home is on the market during the winter months, it can be difficult to ensure your home shows really well. The sun goes down earlier, the temperature is colder and it can be harder for buyers to muster up enthusiasm for house hunting. Here are some great tricks that anyone can do to make their home show better in the winter.
Turn lights on
With the sun setting so much earlier, your home will be dark for a larger portion of the day when potential buyers will be looking at your house. Keep as many lights and lamps on as you can when you are expecting people to be touring the home.
Set the temp
Make sure the home is warm, but not hot. You don’t want potential buyers sweating and trying shed layers, but you also don’t want them freezing. Let them focus on the home, not the temperature.
Make it smell good
Fill your home with a subtle, warm scent like vanilla, cinnamon or fresh cotton. Candles or scented wax are great ideas to quickly fill rooms up with an enticing scent.
If you’re planning on having your home shown quite a bit, offer booties to put over the wet shoes of potential buyers. Keep a rug, chair and trash can by the front door so people can sit down and slip a bootie over their shoe. This will keep your floors cleaner and people will appreciate not having to remove their shoes.
Keep curtains open
If we haven’t stressed it enough, you want a lot of light in your home! During the day, open curtains and blinds and make sure your windows are sparkling clean – it lets in even more light!
During the winter months, keeping your grounds manicured is just as important as it is during the summer months. When there is snow or ice on the ground, be sure to shovel and salt your driveway, sidewalks and patios. Not only will this look better, it will be safer for people touring your home.
You’ll want to make sure your home is always clean when it’s on the market, but during the colder months, snow and ice can easily be tracked in on shoes and make your floors look dirty. You don’t want potential buyers taking notice of a dirty floor, so be sure to sweep up any salt and mop any tracks up before people arrive.
