  1. Turn off the lights

When you leave a room, leave the house, or during the day, turn off your lights! It’s a simple solution that can save you a lot of money in the long run. Make it a habit to turn off lights when you leave a room, and only have lights on in a room that is currently occupied. When you leave the house, turn off all the lights, except for a small lamp or two for pets or to avoid returning to a dark house.

  1. Invest in a smart thermostat

Smart thermostats are a great way to save some money on your electric bill because they learn your family’s habits and can adjust the temperature of your house to what you like. It learns when you are gone and turns the temperature down to avoid heating or cooling an empty house. If you can’t afford a smart thermostat, get in the habit of turning your A/C up or heat down when no one is home.

  1. Cook dinner outside

Summer is the perfect time to fire up the grill and cook outside! There are so many things you can cook on your grill or in your smoker that don’t require heating up your oven. By heating up your stove or oven inside, you’re heating the entire house which makes your air conditioner work harder. Not sure what to cook? Check out our recommendations here.

  1. Close blinds or curtains during the day

During the day, the sun can come in through windows and really heat up your house. Block a little bit of that sunlight by closing all blinds and curtains during the day. If you have rooms that aren’t used frequently, close those blinds and leave them shut until you use the room.

  1. Use energy-efficient light bulbs

Energy-efficient light bulbs are definitely the future of lighting your home. Make the switch now and use light bulbs that are still bright, but use significantly less energy than the old ones.
