How do you think the housing market is doing in Omaha? Is Omaha fairing pretty well?
According to an article from Omaha.com;
Trulia, an Internet listing service, showed that there was an increase in home sales that had a reduced asking price. It said that one third of all real estate sellers within the city limits of Omaha had cut prices at least once. Omaha ranked 10th highest among major cities for lowering prices.
Still, some segments of the market continue to face challenges. Omaha’s first-time market shows well in sales, the step-up market isn’t as hot and upper-end sales continue to lag. Sales of newly built homes are up 14% since last year’s low and the sale of starter homes are holding strong with minimal price cutting. Overall, home sales are up 15% over the same period in 2008 and are partly due to the $8,000 federal tax credit for first-time homebuyers.
We have been noted by Forbes who last month called Omaha the nation’s fastest-recovering city. Due to the housing market, it was the most affordable city in which to live.
So by setting realistic prices initially and taking advantage of the tax credits, Omaha should do alright.

Do you have your PUMPKIN yet? If not Vala’s is a great way to get one. A short drive and you are at one of the top Fall attractions in eastern Nebraska. There are many things to do besides getting your pumpkin once you are inside. For example; haunted house/mine, in-ground trampolines(they’re huge), peddle bikes, corn maze, fun animated entertainment, pig derby, hay rack ride out to the field to pick your pumpkin and so much more (all of which are free). Other attractions are; train ride, paint ball, giant sling shots, pony rides, restaurants and shops, too. This truly is a place for “kids” of all ages.
If you already have your pumpkin, visit them on Sunday, Nov. 1st. They are having a “Pumpkin Destruction Day”. You can even bring your pumpkin from home. They will have many fun ways to destroy pumpkins. Don’t be afraid to get yucky!

If you are out driving around be sure and drive by 846 S. 52nd Street. It is a new Sustainable Design Home. I gathered from Wikepedia, that that means it is a environmentally-conscious designed home. This type of architecture is aware of all the environmental impacts concerned with the building of the home. From the making of the materials, which are either recycled or sustainably produced (meaning they use energy efficiently to make the material), to the picking of the site, to using environmentally friendly methods in building the home. Every step needs to be environmentally friendly.
Sustainable living focuses on more efficient heating and cooling systems, different energy sources like solar hot water, reused or recycled building materials, on-site power generation, rainwater harvesting, and on-site waste management.
They build Sustainably so you can continue to live Sustainably.

The Omaha sorority is looking at buying the mansion at 101 N. 39th St. The Joslyn Castle neighborhood is worried that since there is already a fraternity house in the area it will eventually turn into a “Greek Row”. This in turn might cause the property values of the homes in the area to decline. Other ideas for the mansion have been a bed and breakfast, art gallery, or lawyer’s office.
I am interested in hearing your thoughts on this matter. Should it be turned into a Sorority,

Gold Coast Mansion or Chi Omega Sorority?
other business venture or kept as a family home?
Ellen Jacobsen would be willing to pay an extra $2 for each round of golf if it would save the Westwood Heights Golf Course.
The nine-hole course is compact and easy to get around, making it ideal for an older golfer such as Jacobsen.
“It’s a nice course that gets a lot of play,” she said. “There are not a lot of par-3 courses left, so I’d be very disappointed if they do close it.”
I agree 100%. Personally, I have fond memories of playing golf with my son when he was in middle school. It is a perfect course for the eager to learn and for practice.
All of the four nine-hole courses seem to be down in rounds played and two of them more sharply than Westwood. Why close a golf course when it is doing better than others similar to it? Argument is, if you are going to close a course let’s close one that has other courses nearby that the golfers could use instead and there isn’t a lot of options for golf east of 72nd. Why close any? Raise the fees $2 and let’s see what happens. If things don’t improve then go to more drastic measures.
Let’s let Mayor Suttle know how we feel.
Hopefully Hitchcock Pool will stay open until the original closing date thanks to the Burlington Road Neighborhood Association.
